1946 : Le docteur Benjamin Spock, pédiatre, publie The Common Sense Book of Baby and Child Care qui marque une rupture par rapport aux préconisations antérieures concernant la façon de s'occuper des bébés. En particulier, il remet en cause la nécessité d'opposer des heures de repas et de sommeil très régulières (voire rigides) aux tout-petits, les injonctions à commencer l'apprentissage de la propreté de façon très précoce et les interdictions de toucher ou embrasser les bébés pour ne pas leur transmettre de maladies et ne pas les "gâter". Il prend en compte les besoins émotionnels de l'enfant et recommande aux parents d'avoir confiance en leurs propres capacités avec le mot d'ordre Trust yourself. You know more than you think you do ("Faites-vous confiance. Vous en savez plus que vous ne le pensez.")

Ce livre fait partie des best-sellers mondiaux du XXe siècle. Il a été révisé et réédité en 1957, 1968, 1976, 1985, 1992, 1998, 2004 et 2012.

À l'époque où Baby's first four months est sorti, ce livre en est donc à sa deuxième édition.
